So, last night Jameson slept in his basket. For most of his short life, he’s napped on the couch or in my arms, and nights have been spent snuggled between his daddy and me. But after a couple of good long naps in his very own special bed, Ryan decided we should try having him sleep there at night, too. Sadly, he did very well. Not that I’m not excited about a few chunks of uninterrupted sleep — it’s just that I like having his little face right next to mine. When he woke at 5 to eat, I decided that was close enough to morning, and let him fall asleep tucked in my arms. Have I mentioned that I love him?

I was officially exhausted last night — so much so that I never once heard Jameson stir. Ryan woke each time, changed him, burped him, walked him, and at last would bring him to me so I could feed him. (What a nice guy, huh?) But poor Ry — Jameson had his first infant explosion in the middle of the night. You know what I mean — up the back, down the legs, all over the place. Ryan, champ that he is, cleaned the baby all up and let me sleep through the whole thing.*

Today I feel like a million bucks. The sun is out, the air is crisp, the colors are gorgeous, but most of all, I’m wearing real pants. You must understand; this is the first fly I’ve zipped since May. For months now, Bronwyn and I have sported matching elastic-waisted jeans. At last, at last, I’m leaving the toddler clothes behind and joining the ranks of grown women. (Never mind that these real pants are the wrong size. We’ll work on that later.)

I’m overflowing with thankfulness. I’m beyond thrilled that He blessed us with this little man. He didn’t have to, you know. I don’t take it for granted. I’m deeply honored. And as I prayed this morning, I tried to find the words to communicate how much I love this little boy, and how deeply I cherish him — because really, he belongs to the Lord, and I assume that if the Lord is letting us steward him, then it would make Him happy to know that these stewards love their charge intensely and immensely. Wouldn’t you like to know that if you were the Lord?

One of the scripture cards I’ve been meditating on says this:

The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime; and His song will be with me in the night. –psalm 42

What a gracious and loving and present Father I have. His heart is full of love for me — and it’s actively encompassing me. I want to communicate that same constancy of love to Jameson — lovingkindness in the daytime, and songs in the night. Of course, my favorite song in the night is,

Day is done, gone the sun
but we need not fear…

I’m glad he likes his basket! They always look so small their first night in there!

For what it’s worth, massive explosions often (not always, of course) indicate that moving to the next size diaper might be worth the $$. :) Ignore the lbs on the diaper labels and go by what works… and usually what works is getting a bigger diaper! Jackson didn’t have nearly as many problems with exploding as the other kids, and I can’t help but think that he had the benefit of starting with size 1 diapers (I completely skipped newborn with him since I was anticipating a huge fast-growing baby like the others!) and being under the weight label for a long time!

(Of course, if the next size diaper is too big, you can always shelve them; you know you’ll be using them later on!)

It is a very beautiful day. When I was taking a walk earlier, I almost thought I was a little girl living at Mom and Dad’s again, so reminiscent of the fall days I’ve always loved today is!

I love reading your blog and being current on your life even though we are continents apart. I hope that the independent sleeping continues to go well. I have no diaper expertise to pass on, only to have lots of extra clothes and blankets around because some how, some way those little guys can get it everywhere. You have a great husband!

Enjoy every minute; every single second with that precious boy. My firstborn son turns 13 today (@1:33 p.m.)! Be sure that his newborn pics will be pulled out for viewing this evening. How fast time flys. You are doing a great job!

I’m using a terrific cloth diaper right now. They’re the same diapers I used on Cassie, and now have both Seth and Grace in them. (they are one size fits all, though a little bulky for newborns) Anyway, I NEVER, EVER EVER EVER had a leak out of these things. No matter how saturated or pooped in, they’ve never leaked a single poo or dripped a drop of pee (except for the very rare occasion when I forget to change them and it’s been hours after breakfast and they’re still in the same diaper from the night before… eek!) Anyway, you can view them for curiosity’s sake at http://www.mother-ease.com, the one-size diaper, NOT Sandy’s or All-In-Ones). Cloth diapering has become so easy now that I have the system down. And I’ve only had to get disposables about once a month, if that, since they are used so infrequently. Oh my goodness, he is sooooo cute! (looking at flikr’s right now)

@Angela: (Hi!) We thought long and hard about cloth diapers but in the end made a lifestyle decision and went with the ease of disposables. Perhaps the Lord will challenge us on our stewardship, but I just couldn’t imagine myself rinsing, err, umm, “poo” at 3AM.

    :)

You guys should come visit–it’s been years and years since you’ve been back to CFC?
